Paul Feiler

Born Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Arrived in England in 1933. Attended Slade School of Fine Art, 1936-39. Interned during World War II and sent to Canada. On return to England taught at Radley and Eastbourne colleges until end of war, then at West of England College of Art from 1946, being head of painting, 1963-75. Feiler became associated with the St Ives painters after his first visit in 1949, this was the year before his work moved towards abstraction. 1953 moved into Stanhope Forbes' old studio at Kerris, near Newlyn. First solo show at Redfern Gallery in 1953, followed by several others. Other individual exhibitions included Crawford Arts Centre, St Andrews, 1981 which toured and Austin/Desmond Fine Art, 1990. Retrospective Tate Gallery, St Ives in 1996. Tate, St Ives gave him a show in 2005. Work held by Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums, Arts Council, many British provincial and overseas galleries.
