Biography

Henry Cliffe, Painter, printmaker and teacher was born Scarborough, Yorkshire. Met artist William Scott in Wales whilst in the army during World War ll. 1946 enrolled at Bath Academy of Art. Joined the staff where he became an influential teacher. Works by Cliffe and his students were shown in a number of international exhibitions, such as Cincinnati International Lithography Exhibitions, 1954 and 1960, and at two Venice Biennales. Cliffe had first solo show of paintings at Redfern Gallery in 1956 and one-man print show at St George's Gallery. 1960 won first purchase prize at Philadelphia Print Club and following year gained a Ford Foundation Scholarship Pratt Institute of Art, New York. 1970 a retrospective of Cliffe's prints were held at Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol. 1977 and 1980, one-man shows of paintings and drawings at Festival Gallery, Bath.
